Accounting & Finance

Accounting AI is a review problem, not a drafting problem

Firms do not fail because they cannot generate a memo. They fail because someone has to sign the workpapers.

Field note

Accounting & Finance · Desk 07

The useful stack in an accounting practice is narrow: document intake, variance explanation, and a second-pass on narratives you already understand. ChatGPT and Claude are fine for first drafts of client emails and internal write-ups. They are not a replacement for the ledger, the close checklist, or the partner who still owns the opinion.

Where teams get hurt is silent automation — a bot that recodes transactions, a copilot that invents a citation, a “close assistant” that never writes an audit trail. If the output cannot be tied to a source document, it is not adoption. It is a future restatement.

Start with one workflow that already has a reviewer: AP exception notes, flux analysis, or engagement-letter drafts. Measure hours on that workflow for two close cycles before you buy another seat. Copilot in Excel is often the right spend because the artifact is still a spreadsheet a partner can interrogate.

If the output cannot be tied to a source document, it is not adoption. It is a future restatement.

How we read this categoryWe do not celebrate “hours saved on the close.” We ask who still owns the opinion.

Buy tools that leave a paper trail. Do not buy a chatbot and call it the audit.

ChatGPT

The general model most teams already opened

Freemiumfrom $20/mo
Best for Everyday draftingBest for Breadth over depth

ChatGPT is the default general assistant: drafting, analysis, coding, and research in one chat. It wins on breadth and plugins. It does not know what your brand is allowed to claim.

AlphaSense

Market intelligence search for operators who live in transcripts

Contact
Best for Cited researchBest for Document intelligence

AlphaSense is licensed content plus search: transcripts, filings, broker research. Perplexity is not a substitute for that corpus.

Perplexity

Cited answers instead of a link dump

Freemiumfrom $20/mo
Best for Cited research

Perplexity is the research seat with citations. Use it for current events and competitor pages. Still verify anything that can move money.

Claude

Long documents and careful prose

Freemiumfrom $20/mo
Best for Long documentsBest for Everyday drafting

Claude is the long-document seat: contracts, reports, and careful tone. Use it when context window and restraint matter more than plugins.

Hebbia

Document matrix for diligence and research

Contact
Best for Document intelligence

Hebbia is for packet-scale document questions — diligence, filings, memos. A chat window is the wrong UI for that job.

Julius AI

Chat with a spreadsheet or CSV

Freemiumfrom $20/mo
Best for Spreadsheet analysis

Julius is the analyst-in-a-chat for a file you upload. Good for ad-hoc. Not your warehouse.

Power BI

Microsoft BI with Copilot in the tenant

Paidfrom $10/mo
Best for BI copilots

Power BI is the default BI if you already pay Microsoft. Copilot needs a clean model. Do not skip the dataset owner.

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Drafts inside Word, Outlook, and Teams

Paidfrom $30/mo
Best for Everyday draftingBest for Long documents

M365 Copilot is the writing seat for companies that will not leave Word and Outlook. Buy it as an add-on to a stack you already administer, not as a second ChatGPT.

Salesforce

The system of record enterprises already cannot leave

Contactfrom $25/mo
Best for Enterprise CRMBest for AI on the record

Salesforce is correct when you have admins and objects HubSpot will fight. Do not migrate an empty org for Agentforce.

Dynamics 365 Sales

Microsoft’s CRM if you already live in that tenant

Contactfrom $65/mo
Best for Enterprise CRMBest for AI on the record

Dynamics is the CRM when ERP, Teams, and Entra are already the spine. Do not pick it to copy Salesforce features.

Power Automate

Microsoft’s automation seat you may already pay for

Paidfrom $15/mo
Best for Simple app-to-app

Power Automate is the correct first automation if the org is already in Microsoft 365. Do not buy Zapier first out of habit.

Zoho CRM

Broad CRM at a Zoho price

Freemiumfrom $14/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for AI on the record

Zoho CRM is the budget system of record when the rest of Zoho is already there. Admin time is the real cost.
