SDR / Sales Development

Sales-development tools should combine outreach sequences with accurate call records—not another chatbot

If the tool does not change what happens after the first touch, it is a toy.

Field note

Sales development · Role 03

Apollo (or equivalent) for the prospect list and outreach sequence. Gong (or equivalent) for what was actually said. A writing model for the first draft of a cold email you will still edit. Those are the essential tools. Adding a fourth “AI sales representative” that books meetings into a calendar nobody watches creates meetings with no real buyer interest.

The adoption test is simple: does the AE trust the notes? If Gong summaries are wrong twice, reps stop opening them. If Apollo enrichment is stale, you burn the domain. Fix data before you buy more generation.

Make or Zapier belongs on the edges — form fill to sequence, no-show to recycle — not as the brain. SDRs should not be maintaining a graph of 40 zaps.

List quality and call review beat a clever opener. Every time.

How we read this categoryThe adoption test is ugly and useful: does the AE trust the notes?

List quality and call review beat a clever opener. Buy those two, then stop.

Gong

Call intelligence that coaches, not just records

Contact
Best for Call coaching

Gong is revenue intelligence: every call, then coaching. Buy it at 10+ reps. It feels like surveillance if you skip the change management.

Clay

Spreadsheet of the internet for enrichment

Freemiumfrom $149/mo
Best for EnrichmentBest for Prospecting

Clay is enrichment as a worksheet: waterfall providers, GPT columns, then push to the CRM. Credits are the real bill.

Superhuman

Fast email with an AI split inbox

Paidfrom $30/mo
Best for Email

Superhuman is speed as a product. AI drafts and Auto Drafts. Still email. The price is for people who live in the inbox.

Granola

Meeting notes that feel like a notepad, not a bot on the call

Freemiumfrom $10/mo
Best for Meeting notes

Granola is local-ish meeting notes without a creepy meeting bot. Right when customers refuse another notetaker on the Zoom.

Lavender

Email coach in Gmail/Outlook

Paidfrom $29/mo
Best for Sequencing

Lavender scores the email before send. Cheap coaching layer. Not a data vendor and not a cadence platform.

Close

Inside-sales CRM with the phone built in

Paidfrom $29/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for Pipeline hygiene

Close is for teams that live on the phone. Built-in calling beats bolting five apps onto HubSpot Free.

Attio

A CRM that feels like a modern data tool

Freemiumfrom $29/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for AI on the record

Attio is the CRM for teams that think in objects and views, not classic layouts. Fast to try. Still a system of record — treat it like one.

HubSpot

CRM SMBs actually turn on

Freemiumfrom $20/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for AI on the record

HubSpot is the default CRM when marketing, sales, and service need one record this quarter. Breeze drafts; it does not replace a process.

Apollo.io

Data plus sequences without three vendors

Freemiumfrom $49/mo
Best for ProspectingBest for Sequencing

Apollo is prospecting + sequences + a contact graph. Start here before ZoomInfo + Outreach. Data quality still varies by niche.

Fireflies.ai

The meeting bot everyone already invited

Freemiumfrom $10/mo
Best for Meeting notes

Fireflies is the default notetaker bot. Cheap. Storage and sharing are the product. Customers may still hate the bot.

Cognism

Compliant-leaning B2B data, especially in EMEA

Contact
Best for ProspectingBest for Enrichment

Cognism is the ZoomInfo alternative when GDPR and EMEA coverage are the actual requirements.

Salesloft

Cadence platform that competes with Outreach

Contact
Best for Sequencing

Salesloft is the other enterprise cadence. Pick it vs Outreach on admin preference and existing stack, not a feature checklist war.

Outreach

Enterprise sequencing and deal execution

Contact
Best for Sequencing

Outreach is the enterprise engagement layer. Buy it when RevOps will own sequences. Apollo is cheaper if you are still figuring outbound out.

Pipedrive

Pipeline-first CRM for small sales teams

Paidfrom $14/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for Pipeline hygiene

Pipedrive is a pipeline board salespeople will actually update. AI is extra. Process is the product.

Intercom

Inbox plus Fin — start as agent-assist

Paidfrom $29/mo
Best for Agent assistBest for Deflection

Intercom is a serious inbox with Fin as the AI layer. Assist first. Autonomy last. Help center garbage in, garbage bot out.

Chorus

ZoomInfo’s conversation intelligence

Contact
Best for Call coaching

Chorus is call recording/intelligence inside the ZoomInfo family. Pick Gong if you want the independent category leader; pick Chorus if the bundle is already paid for.

ZoomInfo

The expensive contact graph enterprises already renew

Contact
Best for ProspectingBest for Enrichment

ZoomInfo is the data monopoly a lot of GTM teams already pay. Challenge it with Apollo/Clay before you renew on inertia.

Copper

CRM that lives in Google Workspace

Paidfrom $23/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for Pipeline hygiene

Copper is the CRM for Gmail-native teams. If the team will not leave Google, this beats a tab they never open.

Lindy

Email-and-calendar agents with a leash

Freemiumfrom $49/mo
Best for AI agents

Lindy is an agent that lives in email and calendar. Start with drafts. Do not give send authority on day one.

Salesforce

The system of record enterprises already cannot leave

Contactfrom $25/mo
Best for Enterprise CRMBest for AI on the record

Salesforce is correct when you have admins and objects HubSpot will fight. Do not migrate an empty org for Agentforce.

Copy.ai

GTM workflows on top of short-form copy

Freemiumfrom $36/mo
Best for Marketing copyBest for Everyday drafting

Copy.ai is short-form and GTM workflows — sequences, variants, CRM-connected drafts. Long-form still needs a reviewer.

monday CRM

Work OS that wants to be the CRM too

Paidfrom $9/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for Pipeline hygiene

monday CRM works if the company already runs monday. Do not start a CRM here unless the work OS is the culture.

Freshsales

Freshworks CRM with built-in phone and chat

Freemiumfrom $9/mo
Best for SMB CRM

Freshsales is a cheaper CRM+phone path for teams already in Freshworks. Fine until the object model runs out.

Bardeen

Browser-native automations for the tab you are in

Freemiumfrom $10/mo
Best for Simple app-to-appBest for AI agents

Bardeen runs on the page: scrape, enrich, push to CRM from the tab. Good for SDRs. Not your system of record.

Drift

Revenue chat on the marketing site

Contact
Best for Deflection

Drift is a sales chatbot with a support costume. Use it for routing demos. Do not pretend it is a helpdesk.

Zoho CRM

Broad CRM at a Zoho price

Freemiumfrom $14/mo
Best for SMB CRMBest for AI on the record

Zoho CRM is the budget system of record when the rest of Zoho is already there. Admin time is the real cost.
