The third time you rebuild the Zap, leave
Zapier is the right first automation seat. The third rebuild is the signal to move. Here is the job Zapier is for, the job Make is for, and the skip-if that keeps you from owning two graphs.

Zapier is the automation seat a marketer can build today without learning a canvas. That is the job, and it is a real one. Make is the seat you buy when the Zapier bill got stupid and someone will own a graph with branches. n8n is the seat a technical person stands up when they want the runtime in their house. I am not writing a feature matrix. I am writing the moment you should leave.
The moment is the third rebuild. The first Zap is a gift. The second Zap is a patch because the trigger fired twice. The third rebuild is you encoding a business process into a list of steps that cannot see each other. Paths and filters will stretch. They will not save you. That is when the canvas is the product, not the step.
Stay if the Zap is still a Zap
If a person can open it on Monday and explain it on Tuesday, stay. New lead to CRM to Slack is a Zap. A PDF that lands in a folder and becomes a row is a Zap. A weekly digest is a Zap. Zapier will take the tax as the task count grows. Pay it while the graph is still a sentence. The day the sentence needs a whiteboard, you are renting the wrong shape.
Leave for Make when someone will own the graph
Make is more visual power than Zapier, and a steeper first hour. That is not a slogan. It is the trade. Operations that branch — if the invoice is a duplicate, if the refund is already posted, if the owner is out — belong on a canvas a person will still open. I should say this plainly: Make.com is the only live affiliate on this site. The verdict is still the same if you pay full list. If nobody will own the graph, Make is a folder of broken scenarios in six months, and Zapier would have failed the same way.
n8n is the other exit, and only if you have a technical person who wants the runtime. Self-host can be cheap. You still need that person in six months. Do not pick n8n to save money if you cannot name who restarts it.
Skip this move if
Skip leaving Zapier if the third rebuild has not happened yet and you are shopping because a deck said “iPaaS.” Skip buying Make and Zapier together “just in case.” Pick one graph. Skip n8n if the owner is a contractor who will be gone before the first incident. The comparison page on this site is the verdict grid. This essay is the timing. Third rebuild. Then leave.
