How to Test Shopify Canvas Without Publishing a Broken Store
Shopify’s new Canvas lets a merchant design with Sidekick. Use an unpublished theme, test buying paths and access, then make a deliberate publication decision.
Published October 8, 2026

Shopify launched Canvas on October 1, a visual store-design surface where merchants can ask Sidekick to change a theme. A new layout can feel finished before a shopper has tried to buy. A merchant should test Canvas as a controlled store change: one goal, an unpublished draft, a buying-path check, and a clear publication owner.
1. Check whether your store can use it
Shopify's requirements say Canvas is in early access for certain stores, works on desktop, and supports Shopify-developed or custom themes rather than third-party Theme Store themes. Staff need the Online store > Themes > Edit code permission. Shopify also lists limits involving translations, markets, app blocks and app embeds, theme updates, and downloading edited theme files. If your store relies on one of those, identify the consequence before migrating a live design.
2. Give Sidekick one commercial job
In Online Store > Themes, create an unpublished Canvas theme or duplicate a supported theme. Shopify's guide says edits save automatically, while customers see them only after publication. Ask for a specific change, such as making delivery cost and return timing easier to find on a product page. Provide the exact approved policy; do not let a generated paragraph invent shipping promises. Keep the original live theme available as your comparison.
3. Walk the buying path as a customer
- On desktop and mobile previews, find a product, choose a variant, add it to cart, and reach checkout. Check price, inventory, delivery and return wording against the source records.
- Have someone outside the redesign team try the same path. Note confusion, missing app functions, unreadable text, and the time to reach the checkout. Follow Shopify's accessibility guidance for contrast and readable content.
- Check the current live store in a separate browser tab. Shopify's help says a saved Canvas change is not automatically public; confirm the exact draft and changes in the publish dialog.
4. Publish only when the owner accepts the result
A store owner should approve the final draft after merchandising, support, and checkout checks. Record the expected improvement—perhaps fewer product questions or fewer abandoned carts—but do not claim a sales lift before measuring it. If the test reveals a missing app block, wrong policy, or broken buying path, leave the draft unpublished. The pilot scorecard provides a simple way to count accepted changes and correction work. A faster redesign matters only if shoppers can still understand and complete the purchase.
